"Vigilant" - The Great Horned Owl.
For years, I've dreamt of creating an owl and for months, I scoured the lumber store for the perfect piece of walnut with enough colour variation for the idea I had in mind. I wanted vertical slats of different tones, but similar grain to mimic a "forest" of tree trunks behind the owl. If you look closely, it looks like the tree he is sitting on, is lighter and closer to the foreground than the rest of the background.
This owl was hand drawn and cut using 3/4" MDF on my scroll saw. Each piece was carved to bring forth the details of the owl's face and body as well as the tree branch and leaves.
It was painted using quality spray paints in varying earthy tones. Lace fabric was used as a stencil to achieve the "spotted" detail on the owl's head.
The frame is solid walnut with a double spline corner for extra reinforcement and stability.
This piece comes complete with a heavy duty cleat hanger.
